This dessert is our family’s classic holiday treat.
When we think about Christmas morning, we think about these small balls of fried dough dripping in honey. As a child, my job was to “sprinkle the sprinkles.” Participating in the frying of the dough was too dangerous, but I did help my parents roll the dough, break it into bite-sized pieces and roll into balls. The final step was all mine. I chose the colors and began to “sprinkle the sprinkles.” As a kid, I loved to shower the struffoli with a rainbow of colors and — I still do!
Step 1: For the dough: combine all-purpose flour and eggs until the mixture forms into a ball. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Divide the dough into 4 equal sized balls. Roll out each dough ball into a very thin log (about a quarter of an inch thick) and cut into pieces using a small, sharp knife.
Step 3: Lightly coat the dough balls with additional flour and shake off any excess flour.
Step 4: Frying the dough: In a saucepan, coat the pan with vegetable oil and heat oil until it reaches 375 degrees.
Step 5: Fry the dough balls until they are golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Place dough balls on a plate lined with paper towels to help absorb any excess oil.
Step 6: Drizzle honey over struffoli and top with sprinkles. Enjoy!
